278 Corridor Project

For years now I have been working alongside community leaders, Stoney community landowners, Town and County officials, SCDOT, and most recently with our State Senator Tom Davis in order to ensure that this once-in-a-lifetime project is executed at the highest level. This includes honoring the historic Gullah community and the fragile ecosystem it runs through, taking into account the needs of all Island residents, the changing needs of our important tourism market, and the use of intelligent planning for current and future business and residential access.

I’ve often said this once-in-a-lifetime project won’t just affect Windmill Harbour, Blue Heron Point, Stoney or Wildhorse Communities – if not done correctly with all people in mind, it will push problems down 278 while first affecting the side roads of Gum Tree and Spanish Wells roads. We see that impact with cut-throughs and increase in speed on these side roads today. Relationship-building between State, County, and Local leaders, along with increased project collaboration and communication, is essential to a successful future for all Island residents.

With Senator Tom Davis’ help, we advocated for, and County Council approved, an Independent Consultant to evaluate the alternatives using the Town’s new Comprehensive Plan, which calls for considering all possible solutions before widening 278.  We need Town Council to lead the effort to gain investment from public and private entities to create a vibrant, revitalized North End.

If managed with care and foresight, the development the 278 Corridor AND the Stoney Community will be a benchmark of excellence by which future development on Hilton Head can be held to. By embracing the Island’s strength of our diversity, we will truly become the best place to live, work, and play.

I will continue to ensure that Hilton Head Island remains updated on this project and that I will collaborate with elected officials at all levels to ensure that ALL Islander’s interested are represented equitably. Please email me your comments or concerns at campaign@alexbrownitstime.com.
